 Bio-Medical Application

In this project we were tasked with designing models that could be used to solve real world problems. In specific I chose to design a device that could assist someone with decreased mobility in their hand and allow them to hold and use a utensil easier. This could greatly increase an individuals ability to take care of themselves without the need for assistance.

All this was done through the HESE program at Penn State. This group is dedicated to creating technology based improvements in low income countries.

The completed project is not perfect, but it does work. It really only works for people who cannot move, or lack grip strength in their dominant hand. It can be a little awkward, and may easily vary in effectiveness based on hand size. The actual utensil must be fairly straight, otherwise it might not stay inside the holder. The cup holder is still a work in progress. The first model did not fit in the holder. A new one was designed, but has not been tested.
