AlterEgo

  • AlterEgo is a wearable device that reads your "silent speech".

  • It allows you to communicate with a computer system by thinking what you want to say to it.

  • It picks up on neuromuscular signals triggered when you say words in your head.

  • It can then reply to your thoughts using a bone conduction method that doesn't obstruct the ear.

  • Their goal is to allow people to interface with a computer without interfering with the real world.

  • The device does not directly read thoughts, keeping and ensuring privacy. It only reads words that are deliberately spoken silently.

  • It could act as a way to help people with speech impairments, though no real research has been conducted yet.

  • The device has been found to have a 90% accuracy when reading application-specific vocabulary, though the system is user-dependent and requires individual training.

  • AlterEgo is still very much in the developmental stages. It is currently being created as a university based research project.

  • They are working on decreasing the required production cost, creating a more acceptable form factor, and reducing the training and customization required.

  • Commercialization is not in the near future, so there is not a determined price yet.

  • Assuming they improve the product to the point widespread use I believe the project, or at least the technology, will stick around in some capacity.
